Lot 57

1959 Triumph TR3a

Registration - 922 XVM

Chassis No. - TS54532

M.O.T. - June 2022

Odometer - 68,000

It is estimated that only c.9,500 examples remain of the 58,236 TR3A that were manufactured between 1957 and 1962, so it is good to learn that this very smartly-presented lefthand drive one has been given a new lease of life courtesy of a body-off bare metal restoration, during which the floors and sills were renewed and the lower wings repaired. The car was then repainted in its original livery of Powder Blue and the interior treated to a retrim in blue leather and fresh blue wool carpets. The Triumph is equipped with a 2138cc engine (one of Triumph’s options in period) and this was stripped, cleaned and fitted with new valves, gaskets etc, while the brakes were refreshed with new pipes, pads and shoes, and the calipers rebuilt and powder coated by Big Red of Worcester. The chrome wire wheels were shod with new tyres and the overall effect of the rebuild complemented by new brightwork and lights. The vendor currently considers the four-cylinder engine and four-speed manual transmission to be in ‘excellent condition’ and bodywork paintwork and interior to be ‘good’. This handsome, matching numbers Triumph is now offered complete with a current MOT that’s valid until June 1 next year.

The final iteration of the TR3, the TR3A, appeared in 1957. It was instantly recognisable for its wider front grille, exterior door handles and lockable boot. It continued in production until 1962, by which time 58,236 are said to have been built. A road test by Road & Track magazine in the USA returned a 0-60 mph time of 12 seconds for the newcomer.

In summary:

  • A notably smart lefthand drive import
  • Has benefited from a full body-off, bare metal restoration
  • Equipped with the optional 2138cc engine
