Spring 2021 Classics & Collectables Auction

  Lot 57

1966 MGB Roadster

Chassis No. - G/HN3/78521

Registration - MKX 10D

M.O.T. - Exempt

Odometer – 66,000

This notably tidy home market MGB arguably vacated the Abingdon production line in late 1965, as it was first registered on January 6 the following year. ‘MKX10D’ was apparently then restored in 1988, since when it has remained within the same ownership. Though for many years enjoyed as a summer weekend runabout, this chrome-bumpered example has more recently been retained on SORN, which probably accounts for the relatively low indicated mileage of just 66,000. Not that the car has been left unattended, for the engine has very sensibly been started and run on a frequent basis. The vendor currently regards the MG’s bodywork as ‘very straight’ and the finish of both its glossy British Racing Green paintwork and white-piped black leather interior trim as ‘good’, but notes that the black hood ‘has a small rip on the passenger’s side’ and the under-bonnet area ‘though okay, is not as good as the rest of the car’. Now being made available for somebody else to enjoy, the venerable roadster is offered complete with overdrive, chrome wire wheels, woodrim steering wheel, period radio, rear fog light and tonneau cover. A seemingly attractive proposition at an affordable price.

Introduced in the May of 1962, the monocoque MGB was a welcome progression from the body-on-frame T-Series and MGA models that preceded it. The more modern construction resulted in weight savings (the car turned the scales at 2028 lb), reduced manufacturing costs and notably tauter handling. By the time the roadster line was closed in 1980, a total of 399,070 are said to have been produced; a large proportion of which are still providing good service today - not least in historic racing and rallying.

In summary:

  • An apparently tidy, straight example
  • Low recorded mileage of just 66,000
  • Desirable overdrive gearbox
  • Sorned since 2015, although running well it should be checked over before road use
