Enthusiasts have been uprating and customising Minis from the minute they began emerging from the Longbridge and Cowley factories 64 years ago. The results can be good or bad and everything in between, but are rarely better than this little gem, which has been both immaculately restored and breathed upon at a cost of many thousands of pounds. The quality is way beyond skin deep too, as the subframes, sills and A panels have all been replaced and the underside treated with stone-chip underseal. The pristine blue paintwork is paired with black vinyl trim, while the car rides on a set of black Minilite-style alloy wheels wrapped in quality Dunlop tyres. The badge on the bootlid read ‘Mini Cooper S’, and why shouldn’t it? – the suspension and brakes have been upgraded to Cooper S specification and a twin-carburettor 1275cc engine sits in place of the original powerplant. Other desirable modifications include a pair of torpedo rear view mirrors, twin fuel tanks with locking caps and a Moto-Lita leather rimmed steering wheel. The list goes on, but suffice to say that what is clearly a very special car is backed up by two massive files – one of all the invoices for parts purchased and work done and the other a blow-by-blow photographic account. Quite a car!

With the reverberations of the 1956-1957 Suez Crisis being felt worldwide, Leonard Lord lost little time in commissioning Alec Issigonis to begin work on a radical small car project. Apart from the constraint of using existing BMC mechanical assemblies, and a brief to house four adults plus their luggage within as small a space as possible, the brilliant Issigonis was given carte blanche. His response was the now legendary Mini. Featuring an ingenious transverse-mounted powertrain (with engine sat atop the gearbox), all-round independent 'rubber cone' suspension, front-wheel drive and compact rack and pinion steering, the newcomer was a packaging masterpiece; not to mention one of the most influential automotive designs ever conceived. The MKIII version (1969-1976) brought larger doors, concealed hinges, wind-up windows and a return to the original rubber cone suspension.

In summary:

  • Immaculately presented inside and out. Comes with fresh MOT
  • The subject of a notably thorough restoration
  • Equipped with Cooper S brakes and suspension, and 1275cc engine
