1936 Alvis Crested Eagle Six Light Saloon
Fitted with coachwork by Charlesworth of Coventry

This fine-looking Alvis saloon features a D-Back body by Charlesworth that’s finished in a distinguished shade of black over green, and complemented by dark green leather trim, pale green carpets, and dark-coloured wire wheels shod with white-walled tyres. Clearly the subject of quality restoration at some stage, it apparently spent a number of years in the USA prior to being acquired by the vendor 10 years ago. He considers ‘BXR 853’ to be in ‘fantastic order’ and has no hesitation in grading the engine, transmission, coachwork, paintwork and upholstery as all being in ‘excellent’ condition and rightly adds that the Alvis ‘would not be out of place in a museum’. He is now offering this splendid sporting saloon complete with sunroof, auxiliary driving light, wing-mounted spare wheel and tyre, pair of external rear view mirrors, luggage rack and Alvis logoed fishtail exhaust trim. A truly charming proposition.
The Alvis Car and Engineering Company Ltd produced motorcars from 1919 until it was acquired by Rover in 1967. Without doubt its golden period was the 1930s when it became renowned for its continuing mechanical innovation. For example, the 12/75 model of 1928 featured front-wheel drive, in-board braking, an overhead camshaft engine and the option of a Roots-type supercharger. Independent front suspension and the world’s first all-synchromesh gearbox were delivered in 1933, with servo assisted brakes following soon after. Such models as the Speed 20, Speed 25, 4.3-Litre, Silver Crest and the Crested Eagle offered here quickly established themselves as motorcars of character and quality. The 2.8-litre straight-six version of the Crested Eagle, as per the sale car, was manufactured from 1935 to 1940 and rated at 77bhp.
