The Gold Cup Classic & Performance Car & Motorcycle Auction

  Lot 58

1962 Mini Special
Featured on the cover of Mini World Magazine

Registration - 904 UXF

Chassis No. - MAS3971810

M.O.T. - Exempt

Odometer - 90,000 (unverified)

The totally unique classic Mini offered here was created by the late son of the vendor, and was the subject of a suitably eulogistic seven-page cover feature in the December 2017 edition of MiniWorld magazine. Though registered as a 1962 Morris Mini 1000, discovery of the original colour led him to believe it is in fact a 1960 or 1961 Austin, all of which is now a bit immaterial as ‘904 UXF’ has been lovingly uprated from stem to stern. When he purchased the car for the princely sum of £500 in 2011 it was finished in blue, but was soon stripped of all paint and the shell repaired as required before being finished in the classic Cooper combination of white over its original livery of Farina Grey. The heart of the special is a genuine 970cc Cooper S unit, over-bored to 984cc and believed to be producing c.100bhp. Among many other performance-enhancing parts the engine boasts: a Mini Sport race-spec 7-port crossflow cylinder head fed by a pair of 45 DCOE Weber carburettors; Omega flat-top pistons; Kent MD286 billet camshaft; Aldon Flame Thrower coil and 123 electronic distributor.

The remote change transmission features Jack Knight straight cut gears, a lightened and balanced flywheel, Cooper S diaphragm clutch and a Mini Sport four-pin differential. Braking is by 7.5-inch Cooper S cross-drilled sold discs up front and Super Minifin drums at the rear. Mods to the rubber cone suspension include Bilstein B6 non-adjustable gas dampers and a Mini Spares rear anti-roll bar. Interior tweaks include MK1 Cooper S-style reclining seats from Newton Commercial; three-point Luke harnesses; custom-built Speedwell-inspired facia; and a Moto-Lita woodrim steering wheel. Other items of particular note are: the fibreglass bonnet (for lightness) with bespoke air intake (the original panel is included in the sale); Kenlowe electric fan; Lucas H4 headlamps and auxiliary spotlamps; MK1 Cooper S quick release radiator grille with mesh backing; and John Brown-supplied Rose Petal alloy wheels shod with Dunlop Sport R7 tyres. We could go on, but reckon you’ll have got the picture by now – ‘904 UXF’ is a little cracker!

In summary;

  • Fast MK1 road Mini special created from scratch by proven builder
  • The subject of a seven-page cover feature in MiniWorld
  • Features a c.100bhp genuine 970cc Cooper S engine
