The Bolesworth Castle November 2023 Classic & Performance Car Auction

  Lot 58

1972 MG B Roadster
***NO RESERVE*** Fast-road specification, with an Oselli-built 1950cc powerplant

Registration - EDF 386L

Chassis No - GHN5291785G

M.O.T. - Exempt

Odometer - 25,136

This smartly-presented MGB was fully and sympathetically restored some 20 years ago, and is now a fine example of the ever-popular roadster that just needs a new owner to accompany it on fresh adventures. The sizeable history file includes an invoice from Oselli for an engine rebuild to fast road, lead-free specification in 1999, work that included boring out the 1798cc unit to 1950cc and fitting a stage 3 cylinder head. Multiple receipts for replacement panels from MGB Hive and paperwork from, amongst others, Prestige Autotrim, Moss Europe and the Welsh MG Centre further confirm the extent of the work carried out. This included: reconditioning of the overdrive; a full body strip, repair and respray in red; and new seat covers and carpets, while a reconditioned starter and new hood supplied by Don Trimming were installed as recently as 2018. ‘EDF 386L’ these days sits on 15” KN Minilite-style alloy wheels shod with Bridgestone Firehawk TZ200 tyres. One non-period but desirable feature is the Kenwood entertainment system with display screen and Sony and Pioneer speakers. The current keeper classifies the MG’s engine, electrics, interior and manual transmission as ‘excellent’, and the paintwork as ‘good’. In addition to the aforementioned bevy of paperwork, the history file includes a large quantity of MOT certificates.

Introduced in May 1962, the monocoque MGB was a welcome progression from the body-on-frame T-Series and MGA models that preceded it. The more modern construction resulted in weight savings, reduced manufacturing costs and notably tauter handling. At launch, the model was powered by a three-bearing version of the 1,798cc B Series engine, producing 95bhp at 5,400 rpm. However, this unit was quickly replaced by a five-bearing one. The MKII model of 1967 brought an updated manual gearbox with revised ratios and synchromesh on all gears, as well as the option of a Borg Warner automatic unit. Other changes included a revised rear axle and a switch from dynamos to alternators.

In summary:

  • A sympathetically restored example with extensive history file
  • The Oselli-rebuilt engine has been bored out to 1950cc
  • Numerous replacement body panels, recon overdrive, new hood
