November 2022 Classics Auction

  Lot 58

1997 Bentley Turbo R LWB

Registration - P698 CPD

Chassis No. - SCBZP15C2VCH59899

M.O.T. - TBC

Odometer - 63,120

One of the last of a much vaunted line, ‘P698 CPD’ was first registered in April 1997. Originally painted blue, its sumptuous blue-piped cream hide upholstery is nowadays matched to black paintwork, following a respray in 1998, while the car rides on highly-polished alloy wheels shod with Avon Turbospeed tyres. The kick plates tell us that it was supplied new to its first keeper by Jack Barclay London, since when records show the Bentley to have had just three owners - between them, the quartet have amassed a relatively modest total of 63,120 miles. The vendor informs us that the Turbo R was previously kept in Cornwall, serviced locally and then returned to the main dealer in Bristol for any more significant items of maintenance. A full main dealer health check was carried out in April with all recommended work carried out, since when the car has remained garaged and unused. The vendor presently considers its potent V8 engine and automatic transmission to be in ‘excellent’ order and the long wheelbase bodywork, paintwork and upholstery to all be in ‘good’ condition.

Unveiled at the 1985 Geneva Salon, Bentley’s Turbo R was based on the chassis of the Mulsanne and powered by a modified version of the Mulsanne Turbo engine. The chassis changes were especially key to the model’s success, as this was to be an unashamedly sporting motorcar. The 6,750cc engine with Garrett AiResearch turbo was retuned with Bosch MK-Motronic fuel injection for increased torque. The result was a stump-pulling 487 lb ft – sufficient to launch the leviathan to 60mph in under six seconds and to a top speed of 150mph. A total of 5,864 Turbo Rs were manufactured, just 1,211 of which featured the long wheelbase of the sale car.

In summary:

  • Presented in fine order throughout
  • ‘Owned and fastidiously maintained by a Rolls/Bentley enthusiast’
  • Just four owners and 63,120 indicated miles from new
