1949 Bentley MK VI Special

Registration - 4793 WU

Chassis No. - B207EW

M.O.T. - Exempt

Odometer - 22,514

The reason there are relatively few MKVI Bentley saloons remaining in this country is that the bodies tended not to survive the test of time and Britain’s salted winter roads, at which point the cars were either scrapped or converted into specials. The bonus of going the special route was that, bestowed with superior aerodynamics and a lot less weight, the Bentleys suddenly gained a considerable level of performance. ‘4793 WU’ is very much a case in point. The vendor has owned it for the last three years but it was in the previous keeper’s tenure for 40 years, and it was he that created the special when the original body gave up the ghost. As per the norm he moved the engine and gearbox back some 12 inches and procured a suitably short bespoke propshaft, while the chassis was reclothed in a vintage-eque new body, the effect of which is heightened by brass headlamps and a distinctive exterior-mounted handbrake and battery box. The special is finished in a shade of British Racing Green that’s complemented by red interior trim and a black hood.

The vendor informs us that ‘the chassis is currently excellent and the replacement body in good, sound condition’. He views the 4.2-litre straight-six engine, four-speed manual gearbox and rear axle as ‘all being in very good order’ and says the car ‘starts easily, hot or cold’. Recent maintenance work has included an engine service, the replacement of the hood and battery, and work on the braking system. Apparently the electrics are ‘all in working order’. A fun car whose odometer currently registers an enticingly low but unwarranted 22,514 miles.

In summary:

  • A fun special in the vintage style
  • Seemingly blessed with good mechanicals
  • Recent maintenance
