  Lot 59

1965 Fiat 500 110F

Chassis No. - 0987720

Registation - FNB 885C

M.O.T. - EXEMPT

Odometer – 25,000

Most people’s first emotion on seeing a Fiat 500 is to want to pick it up and cuddle it, and that’s certainly the case with ‘FNB 885C’, a no frills, well-presented lefthand drive example of Fiat’s diminutive automotive masterpiece. Apparently it was fully refurbished in Sicily only two years ago – work that included the installation of a new engine and rebuilt clutch assembly. The vendor informs us that the car has been garaged ever since coming to these shores and always starts first time. It features apparently unmarked white bodywork that’s matched to an equally tidy black vinyl interior. Currently displaying a total mileage of just 25,000 kilometres, it is now available for sale complete with a copy of its original Italian logbook. Classic motoring doesn’t come much more affordable than this.

The so-called Nuova 500 was designed by Dante Giacosa. At its introduction in July 1957 the little Fiat was powered by a twin-cylinder engine of 479cc, the maximum power of which was a mere 13bhp. However, with a dry weight of just 470kg, it could nevertheless exceed 50mph and average 60mpg. Tough, economic, reliable and sensibly-priced, it made car ownership a reality for millions for whom it had previously been a mere dream, and a 500 was the first car for countless teenagers – Grand Prix drivers Michael Schumacher and Jean Alesi among them. From 1965 to 1972, the standard model was the 500F. By now engine capacity had grown to 499.5cc, raising the output to 22bhp and the top speed to 60mph. The last 500 rolled off the production line in 1975, by which time no less than 3.25 million had been built.

In summary:

  • Very well presented example
  • Full refurbishment two years ago included new engine
  • Comes complete with copy of original Italian logbook
