The Bolesworth Castle November 2023 Classic & Performance Car Auction

  Lot 59

1972 Vanden Plas Princess 1300
Rumoured to be one of just 28 survivors still registered for UK roads

Registration - PAB 565L

Chassis No - VAS233611M

M.O.T. - May 2024

Odometer - 87,000

Considering BMC’s 1100/1300 range of cars topped the UK sales charts for no less than eight years between 1963 and 1971 it’s amazing how rarely examples are seen these days, and we’ve no doubt this eye-catching maroon-coloured Vanden Plas version turns a few heads whenever it ventures out. According to the ‘How Many Left’ website it is one of only 28 such examples left on our roads. The car appears to be very much to original specification, with brown leather seating, polished wood door cappings and facia, and fold out picnic tables for the rear seat passengers. The steel wheels have been colour matched to the body and retain their chrome trims and period-correct hubcaps. The vendor presently regards the 1300cc A Series engine, automatic gearbox, four-door bodywork, paintwork and upholstery to all be in ‘average’ condition, and is now selling the Princess together with a current MOT valid into May next year. Unfortunately ‘PAB 565L’ was declared a Category D insurance write-off in 2002, but is clearly now fit and well once again.

Owing to the overt success of the Mini, it made eminent sense to employ the same designer to create a successor for the larger Austin A40 and Riley 1.5. Codenamed ADO16, the newcomer launched with a Morris badge in August 1962 was therefore penned by Alec Issigonis, and echoed the Mini in having an ‘A’ Series engine mounted east-west up front, driving the front wheels. Its technical innovations included single-piston swinging caliper disc front brakes and a ‘Hydrolastic’ interconnected fluid suspension system. The appealing styling was the work of Carrozzeria Pininfarina which, with minor adjustments, went on to wear not only Morris but Austin, MG, Riley, Wolseley and Vanden Plas badges during the model’s 13-year reign, over which 2.1million examples were sold.

In summary:

  • Thought to be one of only 28 such Vanden Plas remaining
  • Comes complete with current MOT into May next year
  • Declared a Category D insurance write-off in 2002
