The Gold Cup Classic Car Auction

  Lot 59

1988 Range Rover EFI

Registration - RJI 7617

Chassis No. - SALLHAML3EA329418

M.O.T. - July 2023

Odometer - 115,000

This generally tidy-looking Range Rover Classic apparently received a lot of attention during COVID lockdown, during which: the floors were welded; the body mounting brackets, inner wings, rear seat belt anchors, springs, dampers, damper mountings, suspension bushes, brake calipers, discs, pads and pipes, fuel lines, radiator grille, front bumper and spot lights were all replaced; and the original seats and alloy wheels refurbished. The vendor informs us that the sills and chassis are ‘in great condition’ but admits: the headlining and door veneers would benefit from attention, the air conditioning is not currently working, one of the passenger door handles is missing and, though the paintwork is in good condition for its age, rust is starting to show in some areas. His overall assessment of the car’s condition is that the fuel-injected 3.5-litre engine, automatic gearbox and bodywork are ‘good’, and the blue paintwork and grey interior trim are ‘average’. ‘RJI 7617’ is now being sold complete with a current MOT valid to July 9 next year.

The Range Rover was based around box section chassis and steel ‘safety frame’ onto which the lightweight outer panels were bolted. Power came from the ubiquitous Rover V8 – initially in 3.5-litre guise. This was connected to a permanent fourwheel drive system for optimum traction – a transfer box offered a full set of high and low gear ratios. Suspension was by long travel coil springs all round and braking was by discs front and rear. What is now known as the Range Rover Classic (1970-1996) changed relatively little over the years, though the last of the line did benefit from bigger versions of the Rover engine (3.9 or 4.2-litres).

In summary:

  • The subject of much recent refurbishment
  • Chassis said to be in ‘great condition, with no patches’
  • Sixteen owners and 115,000 miles from new
