March 2023 Classic & Performance Car Auction

  Lot 6

1937 Jaguar SS 1½-Litre Saloon
Meticulously restored

Registration - JG 9004

Chassis No. - 21558

M.O.T. - Exempt

Odometer - 14,937

According to Experian Autocheck, this gorgeous-looking SS has remained within its current ownership for the last 24 years. The vendor informs us that he purchased it as a major project and has subsequently rebuilt it as required. New parts have only been resorted to where absolutely necessary and any original items that could be repaired were therefore saved - the very presentable green leather interior has survived untouched. He currently classes the four-speed manual transmission and four-door bodywork as ‘excellent’, the 1479cc side-valve engine and black paintwork as ‘good’, and that nicely-patinated original upholstery as somewhere between the two. He volunteers that the exhaust manifold has been repaired and that, though the dynamo is charging as it should, the ammeter doesn’t currently register the fact for some reason. ‘JG 9004’ has apparently been used regularly for short trips, for which it has ‘always proved very reliable’. However, the vendor is fortunate enough to have several cars to choose from and has now opted to sell the rare SS complete with a photographic record of the restoration.

The Jaguar saloon was the first post-war offering of Sir William Lyons’ SS company and launched in September 1935 at London’s Mayfair Hotel. Folklore has it that he requested his secretary produce a list of animal and bird names from which he favoured the Jaguar moniker for his new model. It was initially offered with just a 2½-litre OHV engine and 119-inch wheelbase, but a 1½-litre version with 108-inch wheelbase was added to the range for the 1936 model year. By March 1945 Jaguar had replaced SS as the name of the company, as by then the once innocent contraction of Swallow Sidecars had an alternative meaning.

In summary:

  • Self-evidently the subject of a major restoration
  • Retains its nicely-patinated original interior
  • An apparently ‘very reliable’ example of a rare breed
