May 2022 Classics Auction

  Lot 6

1963 MG Midget
Recently subject to a comprehensive restoration

Registration - BMJ 651A

Chassis No. - GAN2/22474

M.O.T. - September 2022

Odometer - 6,087

Who wouldn’t want to pick this pretty little Midget up and take it home? A MKI example manufactured in August 1963, it started life in Malawi, and its history file contains a registration book for that country for the period 1978 to 1985. At some point prior to its repatriation in 1991, it appears to have had its original 948cc engine swapped for a later, arguably more desirable 1098cc unit. By the time the vendor acquired the car, it had been part of a private collection and was ‘in desperate need of some TLC to restore it to its former glory’. Apparently, after all the components had been removed and the car stripped back to bare metal, the body was found to be in ‘surprisingly good condition’. It has since been treated to a full glass-out respray in Tartan Red, rather than its original livery of British Racing Green. As many of the original parts as possible were refurbished and only replaced with new when absolutely necessary. The latter items include the brightwork, black carpets, wood-rim steering wheel and wooden gear knob. The seats turned out to be in very good condition, so have merely been detailed and now look ‘as good as new’. The hood was replaced with a black vinyl one of superior quality and the painted wire wheels cleaned and refurbished. The vendor now considers the Midget to be ‘good’ in all major departments, and is now offering it complete with five MOT certificates that apparently support the surprisingly low indicated mileage of 6,087.

In summary:

  • Recently benefited from a comprehensive restoration
  • At some point had its 948cc engine replaced by a 1098cc one
  • Previously part of private collection
