November 2022 Classics Auction

  Lot 6

1993 Mercedes-Benz 190E 2.6L

Registration - L495 UGC

Chassis No. - WDB2010292G096006

M.O.T. - October 2023

Odometer - 114,561

When suitably maintained, 190s tend to run and run and this one shows every sign of having been looked after. Presently in the hands of a Mercedes enthusiast, it was treated to a respray in its original colour of red during March this year, as the original finish had faded - as is so often the case with red pigments. However, the vendor informs us that there is ‘no rust or rot and that the car is good underneath’. It was also serviced only a matter of weeks ago and currently has no known problems other than a faulty rear window. Under the circumstances the vendor views the inline six-cylinder engine, automatic transmission, four-door bodywork, paintwork and light tan fabric upholstery as all being in ‘good’ order. The car is being offered complete with upgraded alloy wheels, boot-mounted spoiler, electric sunroof, air conditioning, Mercedes-Benz sound system, two keys and a current MOT valid into October next year.

The precursor to the C-Class, the W210 190 was Daimler-Benz’s compact executive offering from 1983 until 1993. Some £600 million was reputedly spent researching and developing the model, with which the company pioneered a number of technical innovations. The car featured anti-dive and squat geometry as standard and was available with airbags, ABS, seatbelt tensioners and other safety features generally well ahead of their time. There was just one body style – a three-box, four-door saloon. A total of nearly 1.9 million 190s were produced during the model’s 10-year reign, many of which are still providing sterling service today. Thought by Mercedes to have been over-engineered, it is considered by many owners to be a better option than the C-Class range that replaced it!

In summary:

  • A well-presented example of a sturdy model
  • The subject of a respray earlier this year
  • Treated to a full service only four months ago
