The Gold Cup Classic Car Auction

  Lot 6

1996 Alfa Romeo Spider 2.0 TS
*** NO RESERVE ***

Registration - P104WFG

Chassis No. - ZAR600006029619

M.O.T. - April 2023

Odometer - 100,300

The lack of chrome around its black radiator grille marks ‘P104 WFG’ out as a Phase 1 Spider, which the vendor informs us are less prone to corrosion than the later cars. Most importantly, he says his Alfa is rust free and has photos of the underside that prove it. The car is finished in silver and trimmed in black leather and rides on period-correct 10-spoke alloy wheels. He views the Twin Spark 2.0-litre engine, five-speed manual gearbox, two-seater bodywork, paintwork and upholstery as all being in ‘excellent’ order, and summarises the Spider by saying ‘it is a beautiful example that wants for nothing apart from enjoying’. It is now on offer complete with Powerflow stainless steel exhaust, stereo player, jack, tools, spare wheel, comprehensive service history, three keys and the key code, and a selection of old MOTs plus a current MOT valid into April 4 next year. The indicated total mileage from new currently stands at 100,334.

The 916 Series Alfa Romeo Spider was a replacement for the much vaunted 105/115 Series model of the same name, whose 27-year lifespan included a starring role in the 1967 hit film The Graduate. Launched in 1993, the newcomer was effectively a two-seat version of its 2+2 GTV stablemate. Engine options ran from 1.8 to 3.2-litre capacities. The 2.0-litre Twin Spark unit as per the sale car delivered 148bhp – sufficient to propel the model from 0-62mph in 8.4 seconds and on to a top speed of 134mph. The 2.0 TS Spider proved to be the most popular option from the 916 Series range, 28,043 examples of which were sold between 1994 and 2004. The GTV and Spider were succeeded by the Brera in closed and Spider guise.

In summary:

  • An apparently rust-free Phase 1 example
  • Comes complete with a comprehensive service history
  • Accompanied by a selection of old MOTs and valid into April 2023
