September 2022 Classics Auction

  Lot 6

2001 MGF
*** NO RESERVE ***

Registration - CX51 RUH

Chassis No. - SARRDWBGB2D531992

M.O.T. - May 2023

Odometer - 58,560

This late model MGF was first registered in September 2001, since when it has had only three keepers, who’ve amassed a relatively modest 58,560 miles between them. It is a good looking example, whose deep metallic red paintwork contrasts well with the black hood and black/grey fabric interior trim. We understand from the vendor that ‘CX51 RUH’ boasts a continuous service history and that the engine was overhauled with new liners and a reconditioned cylinder head in April 2021. Recent maintenance has included the replacement of the front lower suspension arms, the repair and painting of the underfloor coolant pipes, and an overhaul of the braking system. The vendor presently considers all major aspects of the MG to be in ‘good’ order and says the underneath is in ‘sound condition’. He’s now selling the car complete with sound system, service book and a selection of invoices and old MOTs, plus a current one valid to May 25, next year.

The MGF was penned as early as 1991 by Steve Harper of MGA Developments and then honed over the next few years by Rover’s in-house design team. The result was a pretty, sharp-handling, mid-engined two-seater powered by a 1796 cc version of the company’s K Series engine, mated to a close ratio five-speed manual gearbox. The impressive ride was courtesy of a Hydragas suspension similar to that of the Metro. The hood mechanism was a modified version of the Mazda MX5 unit built under licence. Performance was lively – for the standard (non VVC) version, think around 8.5 seconds for the 0-60 mph sprint and top speed of 120 mph. Some 77,269 MGFs had been built by the time the model was supplanted by the TF in 2002.

In summary:

  • Just three owners and 58,560 miles from new
  • Engine overhauled in 2021
  • Comes complete with continuous history
