An Auction of Classic and Performance Cars and Motorcycles

  Lot 60

1966 Riley Elf
Currently displaying just 51,000 miles from new

Registration - MYL 318D

Chassis No. - RA252912069

M.O.T. - Exempt

Odometer - 51,000

It would surely be hard to find a more pristine, matching numbers Riley Elf than this one. Having acquired it in 2018, the previous keeper decided that, while the bodywork was ‘rock solid, the paintwork merely short of a good polish, and the engine running like a sewing machine, the rest of the car was in need of some serious TLC’, so they stripped it bare. The seats were reupholstered and new trim, headlining and carpeting procured. The brightwork was re-chromed, the dashboard re-lacquered and the badges re-plated and re-enamelled. All five wheels were sandblasted, powder-coated and shod with new tyres. The hydrolastic suspension was refreshed and all the car’s mechanical components investigated and replaced where necessary. At the time the engine was reinstalled, the starter motor, solenoid, battery and clutch cable were also all renewed. Last, but by no means least, the paintwork was treated to the attentions of a professional detailer. To all intents and purposes, ‘MYL 318D’ now looked very much as it must have done on leaving the factory 57 years ago, and utterly of its time in Old English White over Arianca Beige, complemented by a red leather interior.

However, the vendor nevertheless saw room for improvement on purchasing the Elf from our sale of June 2021, and so replaced the brake cylinders and dynamo, rebuilt the SU carburettor and fitted a set of five new Yokohama tyres. Unsurprisingly he says this magnificent little Riley now ‘starts and drives very well’.

Three versions of the Elf were produced during the model’s nine-year reign. The 38bhp MKII launched in 1963 was powered by a single SU HS2 carburettor version of the Mini Cooper's 998 cc unit. In tune with upgrades for the standard Mini, Hydrolastic suspension was fitted from September 1964. Some 30,912 Riley Elfs were manufactured all told.

In summary:

  • A beautifully but sensitively refurbished example
  • Currently displaying just 51,000 miles from new
  • Arguably the best Elf we have yet encountered
