The Bolesworth Castle November 2023 Classic & Performance Car Auction

  Lot 60

1973 Triumph GT6
Same owner since new

Registration - VJW 117M

Chassis No - KE233490

M.O.T. - Excempt

Odometer - 68,494 miles

Now here’s one for the Triumph collectors among you – a very tidy, much-loved, one-owner-from-new GT6, yes really! The car has been entered by a deceased estate, and was supplied new to the late owner by Hewitts of Wolverhampton during August 1973. Its French Blue paintwork is complemented by black interior trim. The manual gearbox is equipped with desirable overdrive, and the vendor presently considers the transmission, straight-six engine, coupe bodywork, paintwork and upholstery to all be in ‘good’ order. The indicated mileage stands at a totally credible 68,494 miles.

The GT6 was effectively a GT version of Triumph’s Michelotti-designed Spitfire and would have started life with the same engine (and been called GT4) had the performance of the prototype not proved inadequate due to the additional weight of the GT shell. The newcomer was therefore blessed with the more powerful 1,998 cc straight-six engine from the Vitesse. The unloved swing axle rear end was suitably revised for the GT6 MKII of 1969. Further upgrades for the model’s final iteration, the MKIII introduced in 1970, resulted in a thoroughly sorted car, whose performance would comfortably outpace that of its main rival – the MGB. With 98bhp on tap, the GT6 could sprint to 60mph sprint in 10 seconds and on to a top speed of 110mph. The OHV engine was mated to a four-speed manual gearbox; suspension was by wishbones and coil springs at the front and, ultimately, by transverse leaf spring, lower wishbones and radius arms at the rear; braking was by discs/drums; and the steering by rack and pinion. Some 40,926 GT6s were made all told.

In summary:

  • A genuine one owner, 68,494-mile example
  • Considered to be in ‘good’ order throughout
  • Entered by a deceased estate
