September 2022 Classics Auction

  Lot 60

1981 MGB GT
Restored to chrome bumper specification

Registration - LUJ 45W

Chassis No. - GVGEJ1AG522445

M.O.T. - April 2023

Odometer - 70,300

‘LUJ 45W’ was among the last 575 GT’s to vacate MG’s famous Abingdon production line before it was closed for good in October 1980, and was first UK registered in March the following year. As such it would have started life as a rubber bumper model, but has subsequently been restored to chrome bumper specification, and very smart it looks too. According to Experian Autocheck it has had only six keepers to date and currently displays a very reasonable total mileage of 70,300. It is finished in silver metallic, trimmed in a contrasting shade of red leather, and rides on a set of Minilite-style alloy wheels. The MG benefits from electronic ignition, and the vendor informs us that the car has been Waxoyled from new and has therefore required no welding. In fact, he goes as far as to say that the GT ‘has no faults and can be driven anywhere’, and currently grades the venerable B Series engine as being in ‘good to excellent’ order, and the four-speed overdrive transmission, bodywork, paintwork and interior trim as all being in ‘good’ condition. The MG is now offered with a comprehensive history, including a fully-stamped service book, plus a current MOT valid to April 12 next year.

With the MKIII MGB of 1972 came a new facia and improved heater. However, the biggest visual change in the model’s history occurred two years later, when steel reinforced rubber bumpers replaced the chrome ones and the ride height was raised by one inch. These evolutions were demanded by the American market, which had accounted for much of the car’s production from day one. By the time GT production ceased in late 1980, a total of 125,282 had been produced.

In summary:

  • A smartly-presented example of the last of the line
  • Restored and converted to chrome bumper specification
  • Comes with fully-stamped service book and current MOT
