February 2022 Classics Auction

  Lot 60

1985 Ford Capri 2.8i
Only 62,000 miles, absolutely beautiful.

Registration - B520 YCP

Chassis No. - WFOCXXGAECY44672

M.O.T. - February 2023

Odometer - 62,000

Popular in the ‘70s and ‘80s, Europe’s answer to the Mustang is hot property once again, and for many enthusiasts the pick of the Capri bunch is the last of the line – the purposeful-looking 2.8i. This handsome example was apparently the subject of an earlier restoration. Finished in red and trimmed in grey leather/cloth it rides on period correct seven-spoke alloy wheels. Though not a concours car, the vendor considers it to be in ‘great condition’, and presently classes the V6 engine, five-speed manual transmission and upholstery as ‘excellent’ and the bodywork and paintwork as ‘good’. The only known niggles are that the radio is not currently functioning and the fuel gauge can apparently be a touch temperamental. The fast Ford is now being offered for sale complete with factory-fitted sunroof, an MOT into February of next year, and a selection of unused spare parts including clutch, water pump, sparking plugs and HT leads. The odometer currently stands at an unwarranted but totally feasible 62,000 miles. An attractive and affordable opportunity for Capri fans everywhere.

Worthwhile improvements came with the MKII Capri models of 1974 and the quadruple headlamp MKIII cars introduced in 1978. Then in 1981 the venerable 3-litre Essex-engined variants were dropped in favour of the so-called 2.8i – a single car range powered by the lusty fuel-injected 2.8-litre Cologne V6 engine. Power rose to 160bhp and, soon after launch, the old four-speed gearbox was replaced with a more contemporary five-speed unit. Ford now had a stylish four-seat coupe with the performance to shame rivals four times as expensive – it could hit 60mph in 7.8 seconds and top 130 mph flat out.

In summary:

  • The subject of an earlier restoration
  • A well-presented example displaying just 62,000 miles from new
  • Comes with a long MOT and a selection of unused spare parts
