  Lot 60

1987 Ford Capri Laser 2.0
16V Zetec "Blacktop" engine on throttle bodies

Registration - D711 PVR

Chassis No. - WFOCXXGAECGA89711

M.O.T. - August 2022

Odometer - 49,086

Here we have an appealing Capri Laser in apparently original condition. However, it is no longer quite as Ford intended, in that its original 1.6-litre 8V Pinto engine has been supplanted by a 2.0-litre 16V Zetec Blacktop unit. And a non-standard one at that, for it now boasts: an Omex 600 ECU, wiring loom and throttle body kit, a four-branch ceramic-coated exhaust manifold, Airtec four-core alloy radiator and electric fan, and a Facet competition fuel pump that sits where the spare wheel used to live. Happily, other items have been suitably upgraded to handle the extra performance – eg the front suspension now sports adjustable coilovers and the entire system has been equipped with Polybushes. The brakes now feature an adjustable bias pedal box with twin master cylinders, Wilwood four-pot calipers up front and braided flexy hoses all round. Steering is now accomplished by the power-assisted rack from a 2.8i Capri and the Ford rides on refurbished original alloy wheels shod with a good set of tyres. The interior benefits from a pair of cloth-covered 2.8i Recaro seats. This interesting, and undoubtedly faster-than standard, Ford that was once white is now finished in black that’s teamed with grey interior trim. The vendor considers the paintwork to be in ‘great condition’ and is now selling ‘D711 PVR’ complete with sunroof, radio/cassette, powder-coated rear axle, new fuel tank, Haynes workshop manual and a current MOT valid until August 12. An interesting proposition.

The Laser name applied to 1.6 and 2.0-litre Capris built between November 1984 and the cessation of the model’s production in 1986. It featured a fully-populated instrument pod, leather-covered steering wheel, leather gearlever gaiter, four-spoke alloy wheels, and colour-coded grille and mirrors.

In summary:

  • An uprated example equipped with tuned 2.0 Zetec Blacktop engine
  • Improved braking, suspension and steering systems
  • A six-owner car displaying an unwarranted but credible 49,086 miles from new
