Spring 2021 Classics & Collectables Auction

  Lot 61

1938 MG TA Sports
From the collection of entrepreneur/author Laurie Seago-Taylor

Chassis No. - TA1914

Registration - CVE 922

M.O.T. - EXEMPT

Odometer – 5,000

This TA was the inspiration for the creation of Laurie’s collection, as it recalled fond memories of his first car, also a TA. ‘CVE 922’ was therefore the first of the group to be restored. It was discovered by chance quietly slumbering in a garden near his home, where it had lain since the mid-1960s. Fortunately the important items had been dry stored in a shed, so were duly sorted, cleaned and packed off to specialists for restoration – the majority of the craftsmen employed in the TA’s refurbishment had received international awards for the quality of their work. Once the chassis had been fully refurbished it was treated to a brand new ash tub. The body panels were all media blasted, repaired as required and resprayed in the MG’s original colour of British Racing Green. The car was then lovingly reassembled over the ensuing two years. The running gear and ancillaries were all either overhauled or replaced. The engine is of the correct MPJG type, though not the one fitted to the car when new. The dashboard was professionally refinished in burr walnut, the upholstery retrimmed in bespoke apple green hide, and the quality restoration topped off courtesy of a new tan hood and matching side-screens. The MG rides on silver painted wire wheels and comes complete with a chrome badge bar and pair of pillar-mounted rear-view mirrors.

Announced in 1936, the TA established the famous T-Series pedigree which would persist until the mid-1950s. Designed around a simple new ladder-type chassis frame it employed a modified Morris powertrain, including an overhead-valve 52bhp/1292cc engine and part-synchromesh four-speed gearbox. A total of 3,003 TAs were produced.

In summary:

  • The subject of a total restoration
  • Only 5,000 mile driven since completion of the work
  • Comes complete with photos from the 1950s
