November 2022 Classics Auction

  Lot 61

1962 Jaguar E-Type 3.8 'Flat Floor' Coupe
The subject of a comprehensive restoration and just 520 miles since completion

Registration - 981 UYX

Chassis No. - 885429

M.O.T. - Exempt

Odometer - 520

Let’s not beat about the bush, this 3.8-litre coupe and the accompanying 4.2-litre roadster entered from the same private collection, are the best E-Types it has ever been our pleasure to handle. Impeccably-presented in Opalescent Dark Blue, ‘981 UYX’ would seem to be just about perfect in every respect. One of the last of the sought after ‘flat floor’ cars, it came off line at Browns Lane on January 4, 1962. Twenty days later it was despatched to Olmette Motors of Greensburgh, Pennsylvania, who had the honour of delivering the Jaguar to its first keeper, a C E Cuplier. At this time it was finished in cream, trimmed in dark blue and featured lefthand drive. Scroll forward 60 years and it was handpicked by the vendor as the ideal basis for his long desired E-Type coupe, and so duly underwent a professional 10-year nut and bolt restoration, since when it has travelled less than 1,000 miles. The stunning exterior is matched to black hide interior trim and black carpets that contrast perfectly with the period correct alloy faced console and dashboard centre panel, plus the elegant toggle switches for which the 3.8-litre cars are also famed. This wonderful matching numbers specimen is now being offered for sale complete with period push-button radio, V5C, import documentation, Heritage Certificate and numerous photos and other documentation relating to the peerless restoration. It is also accompanied by a professionally produced booklet that covers the full story behind the car, and is transformation from a tired lefthand drive example to righthand drive potential show winner. What more can you say?!

The unveiling of the E-Type ahead of the 1961 Geneva Motor Show, is the stuff of legend. Six decades later, all examples are desirable, but it is the early flat-floored versions that are the most sought after, only 2,615 of which were made. To own one like the sale car, ie in as-new condition, is the dream of many an enthusiast, for whom reality now beckons.

In summary:

  • Desirable ‘flat floor’ example – one of just 2,615 made
  • Less than 1,000 miles since being totally restored
  • Presented in stunning condition inside and out
