September 2022 Classics Auction

  Lot 61

1966 Jaguar E-Type 4.2 Coupe
Restored, Home-Market example, with some subtle upgrades

Registration - KGD 772D

Chassis No. - 1E21415

M.O.T. - Exempt

Odometer - 17,416

This striking home market Series 1 E-Type was first registered to a Mr Ian Sommerville of Lanarkshire on October 25, 1966, at which point it was finished in black, the change to the current red livery occurring in 1979. The Jaguar has remained in its current ownership since 2006, since when it has been treated to a number of improvements. For example, its 4.2-litre XK engine was fully overhauled, tested and refitted by Ric Wood of Stockport in 2007. During the vendor’s tenure it has also benefited from a new set of chrome wire wheels, Coopercraft brakes front and rear, stainless steel exhaust and Moto-Lita wood-rim steering wheel, while the bonnet was resprayed in 2020. He presently regards the bodywork as ‘excellent’ and the engine, four-speed manual transmission, paintwork and nicely-patinated tan leather interior trim as ‘good’. The E-Type is now available for sale and comes complete with a smart pair of aftermarket door mirrors, Blaupunkt sound system and an extensive file of invoices and other paperwork.

The E-Type, or XK-E as it was known in the USA, made its debut at the Geneva motor show of 1961. From birth, the car was available either as a fixed head coupe or a two-seat roadster. Like the XK120, at launch the new Jaguar was the fastest production car of its time – its 3.8-litre straight-six engine allowing a 0-60mph acceleration time of a whisker over seven seconds and a top speed of circa 150mph. Despite this, the engine size was increased from 3.8 to 4.2-litres in October 1964 and, with the change, came a sweeter all-synchromesh gearbox, better brakes and more comfortable seats.

In summary:

  • A smartly presented home market example
  • Benefited from a full engine overhaul in 2007
  • Upgrades include Coopercraft brakes and stainless steel exhaust
