An Auction of Classic and Performance Cars and Motorcycles

  Lot 61

1966 MG Midget
Just two registered keepers to date

Registration - GNT 528D

Chassis No. - GAN347158

M.O.T. - Exempt

Odometer - 5,000

‘GNT 528D’ was registered new in May 1966, which makes it a late MKII model. According to the accompanying history file, its first keeper was a Margaret K Paitkowski of Conwy, who seemingly retained the car for no less than 45 years, and in 2005 invested £4,890.54 with H Jones Vehicle Body Repairs of Penmaenmawr in order to have the body completely restored – the bill included a large number of replacement panels and other parts. The V5C shows just one other owner, who acquired the MG in 2011. The car’s Ivory White paintwork is matched to white-piped black vinyl interior trim, and the vendor considers the 1098cc engine and four-speed manual gearbox to be in ‘excellent’ order, and classes the bodywork, paintwork and upholstery as ‘good’. The Midget, which has remained in Wales throughout its life to date and covered a mere 5,000 since the rebuild 18 years ago, is now offered complete with ‘good hood’, black tonneau cover, woodrim steering wheel, invoices covering the rebuild and a fresh MOT valid for the coming 12 months.

The 1961 Midget was essentially a MKII Healey Sprite in a new suit of clothes. The newcomer was powered by a 948cc ‘A’ Series engine, the doors were without external handles or locks and the side windows comprised sliding Perspex screens. Braking was by drums all-round. It was in October 1962 that the engine capacity was increased to 1098cc, raising the little two-seater’s output to 56bhp. At the same time, the front drum brakes were replaced by discs and wire wheels became an option for the first time. The MKII version of 1964 brought with it wind-up windows, opening quarter lights, external door handles, a curved windscreen, and semi-elliptic rear springs in place of the original quarter elliptics, resulting in a superior ride. Thanks to a stiffer engine block and larger main bearings the engine was endowed with a modest hike to 59bhp. Some 26,601 MKII Midgets were manufactured across two years of production.

In summary:

  • Just two registered keepers to date
  • Body completely rebuilt in 2005
  • Just 5,000 miles travelled in the last 18 years
