May 2022 Classics Auction

  Lot 61

1968 Morris Mini 1000 MKII
Very original car, from long term family ownership

Registration - MUJ 172F

Chassis No. - M-A2565 - 571831A

M.O.T. - November 2022

Odometer - 63,000

Most 54-year old Minis have by now either been transported to that big car park in the sky or restored, which makes this very tidy but apparently unmolested example something of a rarity. According to the vendor, all the panels are original, as is its smart Island Blue paintwork (with the possible exception of that on the bonnet), and ‘MUJ 172F’ has apparently never required any welding. The pale grey vinyl interior trim is also in fine fettle aside of minor blemish on the driver’s seat, and the car rides on reverse-rim Cooper-style wheels shod with a good set of Marshal tyres. Other upgrades include a steering column lowering bracket, leather-rimmed steering wheel, wooden gearknob, switch extensions, a pair of grille-mounted auxiliary driving lights and Karspat rear mudflaps. According to Experian Autocheck the mighty Mini has only had three owners to date and currently displays a very reasonable total mileage of 63,716. The vendor volunteers that there is a fault with the fuel gauge, but says all other electrical components are in good order. In summary, he grades the 998cc A Series engine, bodywork and paintwork as ‘excellent’ and the four-speed manual transmission and upholstery as ‘good’. He is now offering the car complete with jack, tool roll, spare wheel and a selection of old MOTs, plus a current certificate valid into November.

The Mark II version of the classic Mini reigned from 1967 to 1970, during which time a total of 429,000 were produced. It featured a redesigned radiator grille, larger rear window and an array of cosmetic changes, and was available with either Austin or Morris badging and 848, 998 or 1275cc powerplants.

In summary:

  • A well-presented, pleasingly unmolested example
  • Apparently just three owners and 63,716 miles from new
  • Benefits from a number of minor upgrades
