March 2023 Classic & Performance Car Auction

  Lot 61

1973 Volkswagen T2 Pickup

Registration - Not UK Registered

Chassis No. - 2642008402

M.O.T. - Exempt

Odometer - 86,403

This fine-looking lefthand drive Volkswagen T2 is a single-cab pick-up that was built and first registered in Greece in 1973, and remained there until being imported to the UK as recently as 2018. Finished in blue and trimmed in beige cloth/vinyl it is apparently still running on its original 1600cc engine and four-speed manual gearbox, with which it has amassed a total of 86,403km to date, which equates to no more than 53,688 miles – ie a modest average of 1,074 per annum. It has remained in single ownership since reaching our shores, and its keeper currently considers the powerplant, transmission, bodywork and upholstery to all be in ‘excellent’ condition, but marks the paintwork down to ‘good’ on the basis of one or two minor blisters that are now evident. He is now offering the vehicle complete with the full NOVA paperwork required to achieve UK registration.

The Volkswagen Type 2 dates back to 1949 and has long since acquired cult status courtesy of such diverse celebrity owners as Jamie Oliver, Martin Clunes, Roger Daltrey and Jenson Button. It has been home to generations of travelling Australians, helped hippies survive the ‘60s/‘70s and become the transport of choice for many a surfer. Variously available in Van, Bus, single and double cab Pick-up, Kombi and Camper guises etc, it would probably have been nicknamed the ‘car that changed the world’ if the Model T hadn’t got there first. The immortal Split Screen T1 variant remained in production until 1967, when it was replaced by the single screen T2. Currently in its sixth generation, what is now known as the Volkswagen Transporter continues to be successfully marketed worldwide.

In summary:

  • In excellent condition for a 50-year-old commercial vehicle
  • A lefthand drive example imported to the UK in 2018
  • Comes with full NOVA import paperwork
