Spring 2021 Classics & Collectables Auction

  Lot 62

1950 MG TD
From the collection of entrepreneur/author Laurie Seago-Taylor

Chassis No. - TD 1433

Registration - 564 YUL

M.O.T. - EXEMPT

Odometer – 4,607

This attractive lefthand drive TD is a surprise package. Purchased by the vendor from California in 2010 after 30 years of storage, it was mercifully rust free but had been fitted with a pre-war American powerplant. As part of the vendor’s comprehensive recommissioning programme, an XPAW engine and Shorrock supercharger were sourced – apparently an XPAW unit was chosen in preference to the technically correct XPAG unit, ‘because the similar and related XPAW ones as fitted to the Wolseley 4/44 generally enjoyed a much quieter life’. While these items were being completely overhauled by a specialist, the rest of the TD was completely stripped with every item then overhauled or replaced during the ensuing six years. The fuel tank was blasted, cut open, cleaned and treated internally before re-installation. Fresh instruments were sourced and sent to Speedy Cables for a complete overhaul, during which a new speedometer face that included kph marking for continental use was added. The car’s black paintwork is complemented by Apple Green leather interior trim, green radiator grille, tan hood and sidescreens, and silver-painted disc wheels decorated with chrome trims and white-walled tyres.

Bored out to 1380cc and supercharged, the engine has almost 50 percent more power than before – ie 73bhp. Its on-road performance is further enhanced by driving through a Ford Sierra Type 9 five-speed gearbox to a higher 3.9:1 MGB final drive for more relaxed cruising. Concealed within the twin reversing lights are additional side lights, amber winkers and high intensity fog lights. This lovely, sympathetically uprated TD has covered under 5,000 since the completion of the restoration and is now available for a new keeper’s pleasure.

In summary:

  • Under 5,000 miles since comprehensive restoration
  • Benefits from supercharged engine, five-speed gearbox and higher final drive ratio
  • Original rust-free body
