An Auction of Classic and Performance Cars and Motorcycles

  Lot 62

1966 Triumph Gentry
Fitted with a 2-litre Triumph GT6 engine

Registration - GVO 968D

Chassis No. - HB29635DL

M.O.T. - Exempt

Odometer - TBC

The Gentry on offer was evidently based on an early Triumph GT6 and therefore boasts what the vendor describes as a ‘lovely, silky-smooth’ 1996cc six-cylinder engine. He informs us that the chassis is in ‘superb order’ and that the fibreglass bodywork only suffers from ‘a few age related marks’. In summary, he currently rates the engine, four-speed manual transmission, bodywork and black leather upholstery as ‘good’, and the red paintwork as ‘average’. The rare two-seater is now available for sale complete with a black hood and all related weather gear, rare Triumph road wheels shod with good tyres, tow hook, chrome luggage rack, badge bar, pair of auxiliary lights, bucket seats, leather-rimmed steering wheel and a current MOT certificate valid to July 14. The odometer currently registers an unwarranted but totally credible 72,000 miles.

The Gentry was the brainchild of Triumph production line worker Roger Blockley. His prototype was created in 20 months around a Triumph Vitesse chassis, 1600cc engine and a pair of original MG TF wings. The result was much admired, RMB Motors was created, and commercial production commenced in 1974 at a mushroom shed in Barwell, Leicestershire. The MGF-esque newcomer was sold as a fully assembled bodyshell to replace that of either a Triumph Herald or Vitesse etc, and required just 12 bolts to secure it for life. The structure comprised: aluminium over marine ply body tub panels; aluminium bonnet, engine bay sides and fake fuel tank; and fibreglass wings and doors. The most frequent source for a suitable radiator grille was a ZA or ZB MG Magnette. Blockley sold the company in 1989, since when it has changed hands several times. The current owners of the brand acquired it in 2019 and are happy to provide spares for existing cars as well as build bodies for new ones.

In summary:

  • Seemingly just two-owners and 72,000-mile from new
  • Benefits from the power of 2-litre GT6 engine
  • Comes complete with a number of extras and a current MOT
