September 2022 Classics Auction

  Lot 62

1980 BMW 635 CSi

Registration - OFX 395

Chassis No. - WBA5342000558530

M.O.T. - Exempt

Odometer - 143,211

Here’s a perfect project to keep some enthusiast busy over the coming winter. This CSi has apparently lain unused since 1999, due to the passing of its previous keeper. However, it’s been dry stored and, in the vendor’s words, is in ‘surprisingly solid condition and should only require basic recommissioning to get it back on the road’. It apparently runs and moves under its own steam, but will understandably require some attention to the brakes and exhaust system, while the beige leather interior would also benefit from some cheering up. ‘OFX 395’ is a rare non-sunroof example, but does feature the winter pack that includes headlamp ash/wipe. The BMW comes complete with its original keys, handbook, service book with 10 stamps, and selection of paperwork including lots of old MOTs. The odometer currently stands at 143,211 miles.

The sleek, Paul Bracq-penned, four-seat 6 Series coupe was introduced in 1976 as a replacement for the aging CS and CSL models. Code named E24, the newcomer borrowed heavily from the contemporary E12 and E28

5 Series saloons and was of unitary, all steel construction. At launch, the range comprised two models –the 630CS and 633CSi; the bodies for which were manufactured by Karmann prior to production being taken in-house. The more powerful 635CSi swelled the line-up in 1978. It was equipped with a SOHC 3,453cc straight-six engine, and standard equipment included a five-speed manual gearbox and a boot lid-mounted spoiler. Suspension was fully independent by semi-trailing arms and coil springs, braking by ventilated discs all round, and steering by a ZF worm and roller system.
