The Gold Cup Classic & Performance Car & Motorcycle Auction

  Lot 62

1988 Renault 5 GT Turbo

Registration - F2 WMR

Chassis No. - VF1C4050501450696

M.O.T. - May 2024

Odometer - 125,609

This is one mean-looking pocket rocket, courtesy of lowered suspension and gold-painted 15-inch aftermarket alloy wheels that blend perfectly with the Renault’s red paintwork and blue/grey cloth interior trim. The car was first registered in November 1988 and has had a total of 19 owners to date, the most recent of whom acquired the Turbo last year. It has subsequently been treated to new tyres and both gearbox and engine mounts, and has only covered around 50 miles since its last service at which the engine oil, plug leads and air filter were all replaced. The vendor now grades the five-speed manual gearbox and upholstery as ‘excellent’, and the four-cylinder forced-induction engine, hatchback bodywork and paintwork as ‘good’, but volunteers that the passenger window has become very lazy, and the odometer has been reading 125,609 miles since the time of the Renault’s 2019 MOT. He is now selling the car complete with radio/cassette player, a set of four reconditioned original Turbo wheels (minus tyres), pair of keys and fobs, handbooks, a modest collection of invoices and a current MOT valid to May 30 next year. At the time of the sale, the GT will revert to its original registration – ‘F229 LJN’.

The GT Turbo version of the second generation Renault R5 was introduced to an eager market in 1985. Its 1397cc engine was force fed by a Garrett T2 turbocharger, which resulted in a healthy output of 113bhp. Thanks to the lightness of the body, this equated to an excellent power to weight ratio – sufficient in fact to allow the nimble hatchback to sprint to 60mph in as little as 7.5 seconds. The model differed from the standard offering in numerous ways, including having: an oil cooler, four-link rear suspension, a lower ride height, wider track, disc brakes all-round (ventilated on the front), quicker steering, aerodynamic 5.5inch alloy wheels, and side skirts. The phase II version that ensued in 1987 differed from the phase I in having watercooling for the turbocharger and a revised ignition system that raised the rev limit by 500rpm, the combined effect of which was a 5bhp increase in output. Outward changes included reshaped bumpers and wheelarches.

In summary:

  • An attractive example MOT’d to the end of May 2024
  • Equipped with lowered suspension and GP1 silicone coolant hoses
  • Four refurbished original wheels included in the sale
