‘LA51 BXB’ represents a rare example of the performance variant of the popular W220 S-class. Being an early example of the breed, ‘LA51 BXB’ is one of the much scarcer, in the UK, naturally aspirated 5.5-litre V8 iterations of this autobahn express. With 360 bhp originally on tap, ‘LA51 BXB’ could hit 60 mph in under six seconds yet cosset and pamper its occupants with the best. ‘LA51 BXB’ is now in the hands of its twelfth keeper with 114,038 miles covered to date. With some cosmetic repairs thought to have been undertaken during 2023, ‘LA51 BXB’ is offered here with NO RESERVE and in a well looked after condition. Complete with an MOT valid until May 2025, two keys (only one unlocks the car but both start it), original book pack, ample service paperwork and spare wheel.
The big W220 S-Class executive car suited the AMG treatment surprisingly well. By modern AMG standards, ‘LA51 BXB’s’ exterior enhancements are surprising subtle and eminently tasteful. There are a pair of big, oval AMG embossed chrome tailpipes, AMG badging and the original set of 18-inch, deeper rimmed, five spoke AMG monobloc wheels. These do exhibit a little surface corrosion but are charmingly original. Inevitably there are a few minor dings and a few paint bubbles around the bodywork, but it all appears commensurate with ‘LA51 BXB’s” age and mileage. The commodious cabin is significantly sumptuous, however, and replete with every enhancement Mercedes-Benz and AMG of 2001 could muster. The black leather comes in perforated, ruched and smooth varieties and the front seats are electrically adjustable, heated and ventilated. The rear passengers even enjoy their own fold down, fully illuminated vanity mirrors. Even the rear seats are heated, ventilated and electrically adjustable. An early satellite navigation system is fitted, and the very 2001 Nokia car phone has its own home in the front armrest.
Along side that AMG fettled V8, the technical specification includes uprated and larger discs and callipers, Active Body and Active Level Control courtesy of active dampers. A rarely seen example on our shores and certainly one for modern classic, uber saloons.
In summary:
· Presenting in a good condition for the age and mileage
· Seemingly admirably original with an impressively equipped and presented cabin
· Complete with a long MOT and ready to luxuriate in immediately
