September 2022 Classics Auction

  Lot 63

1972 Jaguar E-type Coupe V12
A matching-numbers, RHD Home-Market example, offered with a comprehensive history file

Registration - CTO 940K

Chassis No. - 2BW1S50272BW

M.O.T. - Exempt

Odometer - 76,000

According to the vendor, this well-presented Series 3 E-Type has been ‘well pampered’ and, having benefited from a previous restoration, was then treated to eight years of dry storage. It is finished in the classic combination of Old English White bodywork and black leather interior trim, and rides on chrome wire wheels shod with brand new white wall tyres. The vendor has owned the coupe for the last two years and presently grades its bodywork and upholstery as ‘excellent’ and the V12 engine, automatic transmission and paintwork as ‘good’, and adds that the car ‘starts, runs and stops very reliably’. He is now offering this striking Jaguar complete with sunroof, audio system and an extensive history file containing photos of the restoration, and a selection of invoices and old MOTs. The odometer currently registers a credible though unwarranted total of 76,000 miles.

By 1971, Jaguar's jaw-dropping E-Type had been in production for a decade. Despite continual improvements, new emissions legislation in the all-important American market threatened to strangle the big cat's performance. Jaguar responded by giving it fresh claws in the shape of a 5,343cc V12 engine developed from the stillborn XJ13 Le Mans car. The new engine was both effortlessly powerful and eerily refined. With some 272bhp and 304 lb ft of torque on tap, the E-Type once again had 150mph in its sights. A revised wheelbase yielded better cabin space and, together with a wider track front and rear, new anti-dive front suspension geometry and fatter tyres gave improved road holding. Imbued with a more muscular stance, thanks to its flared wheelarches, re-profiled wings and larger grille, it also benefited from vented disc brakes and a restyled interior.

In summary:

  • The subject of a previous restoration then dry stored for eight years
  • Recently serviced and equipped with brand new white wall tyres
  • Comes complete with sunroof and chrome wire wheels
