Odometer - 9,000
This decidedly handsome GT6 was evidently restored some years ago by a retired aircraft engineer. The chassis was powder-coated and the replacement dashboard created by a master joiner over in Ireland. The Triumph nowadays rides on Minilite-style alloy wheels with anthracite-coloured centres and steers courtesy of a woodrim steering wheel – the original items will, however, form part of the sale. Finished in blue and trimmed in black leather this notably sporty-looking GT6 is now available for sale complete with a twin-pipe stainless steel exhaust system, large selection of invoices, old MOT certificates etc. The total mileage covered to date is thought to be around 50,000.
The GT6 was effectively a GT version of Triumph’s Michelotti-designed Spitfire and would have started life with the same engine (and been called GT4) had the performance of the prototype not proved inadequate due to the additional weight of the GT shell. The newcomer was therefore blessed with the more powerful 1,998 cc straight-six engine from the Vitesse. The unloved swing axle rear end was suitably revised for the GT6 MKII of 1969. Further upgrades for the model’s final iteration, the MKIII introduced in 1970, resulted in a thoroughly sorted car, whose performance would comfortably outpace that of its main rival – the MGB. With 98bhp on tap, the GT6 could sprint to 60mph sprint in 10 seconds and on to a top speed of 110mph. The OHV engine was mated to a four-speed manual gearbox; suspension was by wishbones and coil springs at the front and, ultimately, by transverse leaf spring, lower wishbones and radius arms at the rear; braking was by discs/drums; and the steering by rack and pinion. Some 40,926 GT6s were made all told.
