March 2023 Classic & Performance Car Auction

  Lot 63

1989 Citroën 2CV6 Spécial
Believed to have covered a credible 15,000 miles

Registration - G32 0KE

Chassis No. - VF7AZK

M.O.T. - October 2023

Odometer - 15,155

2CVs are rarely seen at auction these days, so it’s good to be able to offer this relatively late righthand drive example. ‘G32 OKE’ is finished in a strident shade of red that’s matched to a full length red sunroof, grey cloth interior trim and cream-coloured wheels. Aside of some minor bodywork/paintwork defects it presents well, and the enthusiast vendor (the most recent of 10 recorded keepers) believes the currently indicated mileage of just 15,185 to be correct. He presently considers the little twin-cylinder engine, four-speed manual gearbox, bodywork, paintwork and upholstery to all be in ‘good’ condition, and is now selling the car complete with four new tyres and Matt’s soft top, plus a selection of invoices and a current MOT valid to the 30th of September.

The creation of Citroën’s incomparable Deux Chevaux (2CV) dates back to 1936 and was intended to motorise the large number of French farmers still relying on the horse and cart. The unique design brief called for: a low-priced, rugged ‘umbrella on four wheels’ that would enable four peasants to drive 110lb of farm goods to market at 31mph in clogs and via muddy, unpaved roads; including transporting eggs across a ploughed field without breaking them. It’s true to say that the international motoring press ridiculed the 2CV when it made its debut at the 1948 Paris Salon, and on testing one in 1953 The Motor described it as ‘a vehicle with almost every virtue except speed, silence and good looks’. But Citroën had the last laugh, and no less than 3.8 million examples were ultimately produced via 11 factories across the world (including one in Slough, England) between 1948 and 1990, by when the ageing design had been defeated by contemporary legislation. However, the charm of the model never fades and good ones remain keenly sought by collectors and classic car enthusiasts alike.

In summary:

  • A generally tidy, late righthand drive example
  • Displaying 15,185 total miles - believed by the vendor to be correct
  • Comes complete with new tyres and soft top and a current MOT
