1991 Vauxhall Nova GSI
Finished in sought after silk violet

Registration - J559 LLO

M.O.T. - June 2024

If you like your rockets to be pocket-sized then look no further, as this little baby could well tick all your boxes. It is finished in arguably the most desirable colour for a GSi – Silk Violet Metallic - and presents extremely well. The vendor informs us that the Nova was purchased as a rolling restoration, having lain unused since around 2007. The work was finally completed in 2019 following lots of time spent sourcing such hard-to-get parts as replacement headlights, Speedline wheels with genuine caps and various brake and suspension components, as well as some finer details for the engine bay. Along the way new sills and wings were installed, and the little Vauxhall completely resprayed. The Silk Violet livery blends perfectly with the Nova’s grey cloth/Alcantara interior trim and the aforementioned alloy wheels, which are clothed in a set of good quality Yokohama tyres. The vendor these days classes the hatchback bodywork and paintwork as ‘excellent’, and the 1.6-litre engine, five-speed manual transmission and upholstery as ‘good’. As a result of fresh additions to his car collection, the vendor is, however, now selling ‘J559 LLO’ complete with history file.

The Vauxhall Nova was effectively an Opel Corsa rebranded especially for the British market, where it replaced the by-then rather outmoded Chevette in 1983. Its not inconsiderable task was to take on such establish competitors as the Ford Fiesta and Austin Metro, something it managed with considerable success, with nearly 500,000 examples sold over the ensuing 10 years. Its best year was 1989, when it was the UK’s seventh best-selling model. The hot GSi version was introduced at the 1987 Frankfurt Salon. Its 1.6-litre multi-point fuel injected engine was mapped by Opel tuning experts Irmscher, and the resulting output of 100bhp endowed the model with a top speed in excess of 115mph.

In summary:

  • A notably well-presented example in arguably the best colour
  • The result of a painstaking rolling restoration
  • Thought to be one of just 27 GSis currently licensed, so rare
