This cheerful cherry red Peugeot 2065 GTI 1.6 is temptingly being offered at no reserve. Arguably the best colour for the legendary hot hatch, it is a Phase 2 model with clear front indicator lenses (and new headlamps add to the sparking appearance), smoked tail lamps and more contemporary upholstery to set off the famous red carpets. Notably, this is a non-sunroof car. Still boasting the original Peugeot-branded Clarion stereo cassette player, it has just 99,300 miles on the odometer, and the vendor describes it as a great little runner. “The underside is rust-free and the boot pan is solid. It’s a fantastic car for its age.” It also has a set of Michelin Pilot Exalto heritage tyres fitted just 100 miles ago.
‘J679TVC’ comes with loads of paperwork and receipts for work done. This includes new Ferodo brake pads, grooved discs and upgraded Castrol brake fluid. It’s also had a new fuel filler neck, while the engine has had a new alternator, auxiliary belt, fuel pressure regulator and fuel filter. The vendor says it passed a compression check, while the gearbox oil has been changed, the coolant flushed and new spark plugs fitted. An honest example of the 205 GTI 1.6 – the purist’s favourite – ‘J679TVC’ is a super platform for an enthusiast to take to the next level. With values on the up all the time, it will be a worthwhile project.
The Peugeot 205 GTI was the high-performance version of the famous 205 supermini, the car that saved Peugeot in the 1980s. Originally fitted with a fuel-injected 1.6-litre engine, a 1.9-litre version followed later – marked out by its beefier 15-inch alloy wheels and smart part-leather interior. For enthusiasts, either is desirable, but the 1.6 is said to deliver the more engaging experience for skilled drivers. Today, the 205 GTI is recognised as a genuine classic hot hatch, with values rising all the time.
