An Auction of Classic and Performance Cars and Motorcycles

  Lot 64

1972 Rover 2000

Registration - TWY 721L

Chassis No. - 4406833C

M.O.T. - September 2023

Odometer - 45,000

This lovely and remarkably original-looking P6 Rover was first registered in November 1972 and has had a total 11 keepers to date, who have seemingly amassed no more than 45,000 miles between them. The most recent of them acquired the car in 2019 and, as retired engineer and enthusiast member of the Rover P6 Club, has kept the car in a heated garage and ensured it’s been suitably well maintained while treating it to regular use for club meets etc. He informs us that the headlining has recently been replaced, and that ‘the body is sound, the brightwork good and the windows and door locks etc all operate as they should’. In summary, he currently rates the straight-four engine, automatic transmission and beige-coloured fabric upholstery as ‘good’, and the four-door bodywork and Tobacco Leaf Yellow paintwork a ‘average’; though we think his marking is a touch harsh. The Rover is now being sold complete with a sizeable history file of invoices and old MOTs, plus a current one valid into September.

Designed in-house by Spen King, David Bache and Gordon Bashford, Rover’s P6 model bristled with innovation and was rightly the winner of the first ever European Car of the Year Award. Its monocoque shell featured bolt-on panels, braking was by discs all-round and the steering by Marles worm and roller, while the fully independent suspension comprised a novel de Dion arrangement at the rear and an equally unique rocker system operating horizontally-mounted coil springs at the front. The car was initially powered by a 1978cc (hence the 2000 name) OHC in-line four-cylinder unit of 90bhp. Some 322,302 P6 Rovers of varying engine capacity were produced before the range was superseded by the SD1 in 1977.

In summary:

  • Just 45,000 indicated miles from new courtesy of 11 keepers
  • Owned for the last five years by a fastidious member of the P6 Club
  • Comes complete with good history file and a current MOT
