February 2022 Classics Auction

  Lot 64

1972 Triumph Stag
Desirable manual gearbox, odometer currently registers only 61,381 miles.

Registration - JDS 732K

Chassis No. - ID119810

M.O.T. - Exempt

Odometer - 61,381

This relatively early (MKI) example of Triumph’s fine V8-engined sports car features Old English White bodywork teamed with a black leather interior. It has at some stage benefited from a rebuild and respray, but retains its original powerplant. The majority of Stags drove through a three-speed Borg warner automatic gearbox, but this car is equipped with the increasingly sought-after four-speed manual transmission. The vendor presently regards the powerplant, gearbox, convertible bodywork, paintwork and upholstery to all be in ‘good’ condition, and is now offering ‘JDS 732K’ complete with ‘loads of service history’, receipts for the restoration work, and two sets of keys. The odometer currently registers 61,381 miles, which is believed to be correct.

The British-built Stag was designed to compete with the established SL models from Mercedes-Benz. Like the Triumph 2000 it was developed from, it was styled by Italian maestro Giovanni Michelotti and featured the monocoque construction, fully independent suspension, disc/drum brakes, power-assisted rack and pinion steering and driveline of that saloon. The powerplant, however, was an all-new OHC V8 unit of 2997cc, fed by a pair of Zenith Stromberg carburettors. The Stag received a warm reception at the time of launch in 1970. However, views on the model soured once it fell into the hands of customers. The main problems concerned the camshaft drive chains, cylinder heads and gaskets, water pumps and waterways of the new engine. Restorers have long since solved such maladies. Had Triumph themselves managed to do so, these great cars would surely have lived a longer, infinitely more successful life. As it was, production ceased in 1977 after some 25,877 examples had been made – c.9,000 of which have survived in the UK.

In summary:

  • The subject of some early restoration and a respray
  • Equipped with the desirable manual gearbox
  • Currently displaying an unwarranted but highly credible 61,381 miles
