March 2023 Classic & Performance Car Auction

  Lot 64

1973 MG Midget

Registration - GED 341L

Chassis No. - GAN5135588G

M.O.T. - Exempt

Odometer - 63,800

This tidy-looking MKIII Midget was first registered in July 1973 and has had a total of seven keepers who, between them, have amassed no more than around 63,000 miles. The vendor informs us that the car was treated to a full restoration around 10 years ago, since when it has attended a number of car shows and rallies etc. He says the MG ‘runs, drives and stops very reliably’, and presently classes the 1275cc A Series engine and tan leather interior trim as being in ‘excellent’ order, and the four-speed manual gearbox, bodywork and Teal Blue paintwork as ‘excellent to good’. He is now offering the car complete with undersealed body, both soft and hard tops, rear compartment cover, full tonneau cover, chrome luggage rack, spare passenger door mirror, and a history file containing a selection of old MOTs, other items of paperwork and photographic proof of the restoration. The attractive registration GED 341L is believed to be transferable.

The 1961 Midget was essentially a MKII Healey Sprite in a new suit of clothes. The newcomer was powered by a 948cc ‘A’ Series engine, the doors were without external handles or locks and the side windows comprised sliding Perspex screens. Braking was by drums all-round. By the time of the MKIII version, the motor’s capacity had been increased via 1098cc to 1275cc, the semi-elliptic rear springs had replaced the original quarter elliptic ones, front braking was now by discs, and wind-up windows had been fitted together with a superior hood. In January 1972 the square-shaped rear wheel arches were supplanted by round ones, which remained a feature of the model until the advent of the Midget 1500. Many enthusiasts of the marque consider the round-arched chrome bumper cars, such as ‘GED 341L’, to be the pick of the Midget bunch.

In summary:

  • A well-presented example that was fully restored c.10 years ago
  • Just seven keepers and 63,000 miles from new
  • Comes with both soft and hard tops and a tonneau cover
