  Lot 64

1987 Vauxhall Astra GTE
A well-presented example complete with current MOT

Registration - D208 POV

Chassis No. - WOL000043HE168668

M.O.T. - April 2024

Odometer - 122,000

Here we have a very tidy eight-valve version of the popular 2-litre Astra GTE. The vendor believes it may have been the subject of an earlier restoration, though there is no related paperwork to confirm that. Either way, this sporty Vauxhall seems to be in generally good order and remains very much to the specification in which it would have left the factory 36 years ago. Its white bodywork is complemented by grey cloth trim and the vendor presently views the hatchback bodywork and paintwork as being in ‘excellent’ condition, and classes the four-cylinder engine, five-speed manual transmission and upholstery as ‘good’. He adds that the digital dashboard, a component that can often give problems on this model, is in perfect working order and devoid of the pixel bleed that can occur. The car has had 10 keepers to date, who’ve amassed a total of 122,000 miles between them – a figure that is apparently supported by the accompanying MOT certificates. ‘D208 POV’ is now being offered complete with glass sunroof, Panasonic audio unit, Fisher C-Box cassette storage system, history file, Haynes workshop manual and a current MOT valid into April next year.

Now in its eighth generation, the Vauxhall Astra hit the UK market in March 1980 as a replacement for the long-serving Viva model. The GTE version that was introduced three years later was intended as a direct competitor to such rival offerings as the Ford XR3, Volkswagen Golf GTi and Fiat Strada 105TC. It quickly proved to be a valid alternative to such established stars, both on road and as a race and rally car. The Mark 2 Astra that range made its debut in October 1984 featured a completely restyled, notably more aerodynamic body. A GTE version was included in the mix from the outset and though it initially used the same 1.8-litre unit as the original car, this was quickly supplanted by a punchier 2-litre eight-valve unit with an output of 124bhp.

In summary:

  • A very original specification example
  • Ten owners and 122,000 miles from new
  • Comes complete with some history and a current MOT
