November 2022 Classics Auction

  Lot 65

1966 Ford Cortina 1500 Super

Registration - FWN 111D

Chassis No. - BA84EE40219

M.O.T. - Exempt

Odometer - 75,473

This Cortina would certainly stand out in a crowd. Though not a GT as the tail badges suggest, it certainly looks the part having been fully restored and repainted in blue and white on a rotisserie as little as two years ago. The picture is completed by a set of Minilite-style alloy wheels and quartet of auxiliary driving lights. A peek inside reveals recoloured blue upholstery, a bespoke centre console and woodrim steering wheel. Unseen, but certainly good news for the enthusiast drivers among you, are the set of AVO dampers that have also been fitted. Most recently part of a large private collection, ‘FWN 111D’ is now being offered complete with its original bill of sale from Avenue Garage & Service Station, Pontardawe, Glamorgan for the princely sum of £768 seven shillings and six pence, plus a 2020 receipt for new carpets and a selection of old tax discs, MOTs and other paperwork.

With few Cortinas still in everyday use, it’s hard to believe that the model was by far the Britain’s best-selling car throughout the 1970s – available in two and four-door saloon or estate versions, the model dominated our roads. Five generations were produced between 1962 and 1982, each of which notched up over a million sales. At introduction the car was powered by an 1193cc three-bearing version of the four-cylinder, OHV ‘Kent’ engine, though the option of a five-bearing 1500cc unit followed within months. Initially the mechanical specification echoed that of the Anglia with four-speed manual gearbox, drum brakes all-round, MacPherson strut front suspension, live axle mounted on leaf springs at the rear, and recirculating ball steering.

In summary:

  • Treated to a full restoration and repaint two years ago
  • Equipped with Minilite-style alloys and AVO dampers
  • Seven owners and an indicated 75,473 miles from new
