An Auction of Classic and Performance Cars and Motorcycles

  Lot 65

1970 Jaguar E-Type 2+2 4.2

Registration - CAU 61H

Chassis No. - J70PIR43093BW

M.O.T. - Exempt

Odometer - 97,600

The very tidy Series 2 4.2-litre E-Type on offer was first registered in May 1970 and immediately exported to the USA, where it remained until repatriated in 1991. It has subsequently been converted to righthand drive, though retains its original engine intake system of a pair of Stromberg carburettors, as opposed to the triple SUs that were fitted to home market examples. Its white bodywork is complemented by red leather interior trim and the Jaguar rides on chrome wire wheels. The car has recently been treated to a new battery and stainless steel exhaust system and had its alternator refurbished. The vendor presently regards the engine, automatic transmission, 2+2 bodywork and paintwork as all being in ‘good’ condition, and the upholstery as ‘average’. ‘CAU 61H’ is now being sold complete with push-button radio, handbook and a selection of receipts. The indicated mileage is an unwarranted but totally credible 97,698.

The last E-Type Jaguar rolled off the production line in 1975, yet the model still excites enthusiasts of all generations, its Malcolm Sayer–penned lines thought to be among the most striking ever to adorn a motorcar. From birth, the car was available as a fixed head coupe or two-seat roadster. For 1966, a 2+2 version of the coupe was added to the range, which was 9in longer and featured a more vertical windscreen. The Series 3 version was introduced in 1971, virtually all examples of which were fitted with Jaguar’s new 5.3-litre V12 engine. The original wheelbase was discontinued and the revised car offered only as roadster or 2+2 coupe. Production continued until the E-Type was superseded by the XJS in 1975, by when some 72,507 examples of all models had been built, some 5,326 of which were Series 2 2+2 coupes like the sale car.

In summary:

  • An export Series 2 model repatriated from the USA in 1991
  • An automatic example converted to righthand drive
  • Equipped with stainless steel exhaust system and new battery
