March 2023 Classic & Performance Car Auction

  Lot 65

1975 Ford Escort 1600 GL

Registration - LGT 940N

Chassis No. - AFRS82624

M.O.T. - Exempt

Odometer - 56,000

Now here’s an interesting opportunity for the many MKII Escort lovers among you. It’s a Halewood-built South African-assembled 1600 GL that was owned by the president of the appropriate South African motor club and imported to the UK by the vendor in December 2021. We understand that it was restored around five years ago, during which the Kent engine was rebuilt, the body resprayed in Midnight Blue, the interior retrimmed in a deep red shade of vinyl, a new headlining installed and the wiring replaced. The net effect is impressive, especially when you add the fact that the Ford rides on recently-added Minilite wheels and appears to benefit from other such upgrades as: a fabricated performance inlet manifold, freeflow air filter, LED headlights, sound-deadening for the boot and front bulkhead, domed period-style door mirrors, woodrim steering wheel and radio/CD player. The vendor presently rates the four-cylinder engine and four-speed manual transmission as ‘excellent’, the upholstery as ‘good’ and the four-door bodywork and paintwork as ‘good to average’. He adds that ‘the Escort is a nice reliable driver that does everything it should’. It comes complete with a UK V5C as well a South African certificate of title. The total mileage to date is understood to be c.56,000.

For five years from 1975, British-made MII Escorts were assembled in Struandale, Port Elizabeth. The line-up was different to the UK one and included a well-equipped four-door 1600 GL, the Kent engine of which boasted 70bhp. These cars now make popular imports as, thanks to South African climate being considerably warmer and dryer than our own, they tend to be free of the corrosion that has affected most UK examples to one degree or another.

In summary:

  • A South African built car imported to the UK in December 2021
  • A well-presented example with some desirable upgrades
  • Quite extensively restored around five years ago.
