November 2021 Classics Auction

  Lot 65

1986 Volkswagen Golf GTI MK2
Comes with a comprehensive history file dating back to 1986.

Registration - C246 RFE

Chassis No. - WVWZZZ19ZGW731301

M.O.T. - July 2022

Odometer - 173,425

James May once described the Volkswagen Golf as ‘the only car that really needs to exist’, and for 47 years it has been the small family car to beat. The notably tidy MK2 GTI on offer belies its age and mileage of 173,425. It has apparently recently been treated to a degree of bodywork, that included the fitment of some new panels and a complete respray in its original attractive livery of Jade Green. The grey cloth interior trim is also in fine order, with the exception of the driver’s offside seat bolster that would now benefit from attention. The vendor, who’s retained the Golf for the last nine years, presently regards the bodywork as ‘excellent’, the paintwork, upholstery, and engine as ‘good’, and the five-speed manual transmission as ‘average’. He informs us that ‘C246 RFE’ ‘pulls strongly through every gear’, and the that the tyres and (non-original) alloy wheels are all ‘in good condition’. Serviced as recently as July this year, the VW comes complete with power steering, leak-proof factory-fitted sunroof, its original mouldings and badges (which are currently separate to the car), and a large history file containing multiple receipts, plus a current MOT valid until July 14 next year.

Launched in 1983, the second generation version of the now ubiquitous Golf was bigger overall than the original design and more rounded in shape. As before, the GTI version was powered by a 110.5bhp normally-aspirated in-line four-cylinder engine fed by Bosch K-Jetronic fuel injection (hence the I in the name). The popular model was available as a three or five-door hatchback.

In summary:

  • Has benefited from recent bodywork and a total respray in its original livery
  • Comes with a comprehensive history file dating back to 1986
  • MOT’d into July next year
