February 2022 Classics Auction

  Lot 65

1990 Fiat X1/9 Gran Finale
A beautiful example of the pretty Bertone-designed X19 run-out specials.

Registration - G777 BFS

Chassis No. - ZBB128AS007164339

M.O.T. - March 2022

Odometer - 57,800

A rare survivor on these shores, this pretty little righthand drive X1/9 is resplendent in Mica Red – a memorable colour shared with a percentage of the iconic Bertone Volvos. The livery is complemented by a gloss black roof, silver painted alloy wheels and blue/black interior trim. The vendor informs us that the Fiat is the subject of a previous restoration, and in more recent times has benefited from a new clutch, four new tyres and many other replacement parts. He currently considers the four-cylinder engine, five-speed gearbox, two-door bodywork, paintwork and upholstery to all be in ‘good’ order, and says ‘G777 BFS’ has seen little use in recent times and minimal mileage since the last MOT. He is now offering the car complete with Sanyo radio/cassette player, a ‘huge’ file of receipts, magazine articles, and photos relating to the restoration. Also included is the service book that’s stamped up to 42,000 miles, while the vendor confirms the current indicated total mileage of just 58,000 to be genuine.

Penned by Gandini, the X1/9s were initially produced by Bertone before transportation to Fiat’s Lingotto factory for final assembly. However, in 1982, shortly after the mid-mounted powerplant had been increased in capacity from 1290 to 1498cc, Bertone assumed responsibility for all aspects of the model’s manufacture, and these later cars were appropriately badged ‘Bertone X1/9’. Production continued until 1989, by which time a total of 160,000 examples had been built – 140,500 by Fiat and 19,500 by Bertone. The model featured a handy Targa top and Bertone versions included revised footwells for enhanced legroom. Based on the SE version, the very last of the line were badged ‘Gran Finale’ and featured a rear spoiler.

In summary:

  • A well-presented example with Mica Red bodywork and black roof
  • The subject of a previous restoration
  • Just 58,000 miles travelled from new
