The Gold Cup Classic & Performance Car & Motorcycle Auction

  Lot 65

2003 Renault Clio II RS 172 Cup
Superb throughout and unmolested

Registration - KM52 EWC

Chassis No. - VF1CB1NDF27826120

M.O.T. - April 2024

Odometer - 75,410

‘KM52 EWC’ is finished in the regular 172 CUP colour of Mondial Blue and retains its original Speedline wheels, which are presented in good order and shod with quality Michelin Pilot Sport tyres all round. The car would appear to be totally standard and unmolested (aside of the upgrade to a stainless steel exhaust system), and was acquired by the most recent of its 12 keepers in May 2021. He currently considers the five-speed manual transmission to be in ‘excellent’ shape and the punchy 2.0-litre engine, hatchback bodywork, paintwork and grey cloth upholstery to all be in ‘good’ order. He informs us that the headlining has been renewed and the steering wheel retrimmed, and is now selling the sporty Renault complete with its factory-fitted radio/CD, pair of keys, service book, owner’s manuals, a degree of other paperwork and a current MOT certificate valid to March 19 next year.

The Cup version of the 172 was built to achieve Group N homologation for the model and prioritised performance over comfort. The result was therefore a genuine rival to Honda’s Civic Type R and Ford’s Focus RS – a true heir to the throne once occupied by the Clio Williams. Weight was saved by the removal of ABS, climate control, air conditioning, a degree of sound-proofing and the use of thinner windscreen glass, while cloth replaced leather for the upholstery. Handling and roadholding were improved by changes to the front splitter and rear spoiler, a widening of the track front and rear, and tweaks to the suspension. The Cup models were all fitted with lightweight 16-inch Speedline Turini alloy wheels and the majority were finished in Mondial Metallic Blue. Though the engine remained unchanged from the standard 172, performance was improved by the reduction in weight, and the 0-60mph sprint could now be achieved in under 6.5 seconds. Yes, the 172 Cup was a pocket rocket by any standards and good ones are now keenly sought by those in the know.

In summary:

  • An apparently very original, unmolested example
  • 75,410 miles and 12 keepers from new
  • Comes complete some service history and a current MOT
