Lot 66

1959 Citroën 2CV AZL

Registration - 920 XVC

Chassis No. - 2383142

M.O.T. - Exempt

Odometer - 49,792

This heavily patinated slice of Gallic automotive history had been slumbering in a French barn for 17 years when it was rescued and brought to the UK in 2017 by the vendor. His aim was simple – to get the car back on the road and UK registered. However, his goal was not achieved without stripping the Citroën down to the chassis and introducing a lot of replacement parts. These included: lower bulkhead, floor and spare wheel well panels; suspension canisters and friction plates; clutch; brake lines and pads; track rod ends; coil and ignition (now electronic) wiring system; headlights; fuel tank; rare, early-style heat exchanger; exhaust system; Michelin tyres; battery and battery cover; seat covers and floor mats. Additionally, the starter motor was rebuilt and the carburettor sonic cleaned. Unsurprisingly, the related bills amounted to over £5,000 and the vendor now classes: the electrics as ‘good’; the interior, 435cc engine and four-speed manual transmission as ‘average’; the bodywork as ‘below average’; and the hand-applied green paintwork as ‘poor’. In summary he says ‘the 2CV is very charming and gets a positive reaction every time out. It drives really nicely and will happily reach an indicated 60mph, and everything works’. ‘920 XVC’ now seeks a new keeper who’ll continue the road to full restoration.

The 2CV’s unique design brief called for: a low-priced, rugged ‘umbrella on four wheels’ that would enable four peasants to drive 110lb of farm goods to market at 31mph in clogs and via muddy, unpaved roads; including transporting eggs across a ploughed field without breaking them.

In summary:

  • Restored to working order, and featuring many new parts
  • Currently displaying just 49,792 kilometres from new – a credible figure for a car that lay idle for 17 years
  • Comes complete with various new/old spares
