The Bolesworth Castle November 2023 Classic & Performance Car Auction

  Lot 66

1971 Fiat 500 L
***NO RESERVE*** Upgraded to 650cc and fitted with all-synchromesh transmission from the later Fiat 126

Registration - AKE 168J

Chassis No. - 2739878

M.O.T. - September 2024

Odometer - 82,000

‘AKE 168J’ is a charming lefthand drive 500 that was manufactured in 1971 and imported from Italy and first UK registered in 2003. According to VDI Check, it’s had five keepers following its arrival on these shores, the most recent of whom acquired the little Fiat in September last year. Since his purchase, it’s been treated to fresh interior trim and a modest amount of paintwork, plus the body’s (removable) Italian-coloured stripes. At some stage the Nuova has also benefited from an engine upgrade to 650cc and the replacement of the original gearbox with an all-synchromesh Fiat 126 one. Unusual in not having a sunroof, the 500 was equipped with a new clutch 50 miles ago and last serviced as recently as this September. The vendor currently classes the transmission and red upholstery as ‘excellent’, and two-cylinder powerplant, two-door bodywork and white paintwork as ‘good’. ‘AKE 168J’ is now being offered complete with a few Abarth-oriented flourishes, spare wheel and tool kit, its original Italian owner’s manual and a large selection of UK invoices and old tax discs, plus a current MOT valid to September 25 next year. The vendor believes the indicated mileage of 82,092 kilometers to be correct.

The Nuova 500 was designed by Dante Giacosa, the man also responsible for its predecessor, the Cinquecento or Topolino (little mouse) as the public immediately christened it. The Nuova is a masterpiece of packaging, the rear-wheel drive, rear-engined layout leaving a remarkably uncluttered cabin with adequate room for four passengers, despite the diminutive length of just 9.74ft. At its introduction in 1957 the little Fiat was powered by a twin-cylinder engine of 479cc and just 13bhp, but by the time of the later 500 F the capacity had grown to 499.5cc and the output to 22bhp – sufficient for a maximum speed of c.60mph combined with a fuel consumption of over 50mpg. The L (Lusso) derivative available between 1967 and 1972 was a more richly trimmed and better-appointed version. The last 500 rolled off the production line in 1975, by which time no less than 3.25 million had been built.

In summary:

  • A tidy lefthand drive example imported in 2003
  • The subject of a fresh clutch and replacement interior trim
  • Comes with a folder ‘full of bills’ and an MOT into next September
