An Auction of Classic and Performance Cars and Motorcycles

  Lot 66

1973 Jaguar E-Type Coupe 5.3 V12
Three owners from new

Registration - FWX 190L

Chassis No. - US1S74546BW

M.O.T. - Exempt

Odometer - 83,616

This striking V12 coupe is a 1972 lefthand drive export model that spent the first 48 years of its life in the car friendly climate of Arizona - as the vendor put it, ‘it hadn’t seen rain until we photographed it in the UK, and it’s totally rust free’. It was imported to these shores in 2020 and first UK registered the following year. The Jaguar is finished in red, trimmed in tan leather and rides on steel wheels shod with Michelin tyres. It appears to be remarkably original, apart from a degree of paintwork, an upgrade from the American-specification Dellorto carburettors to a quartet of SUs, and the fitment of a stainless steel exhaust system. The vendor presently regards the 5.3-litre engine, automatic transmission and 2+2 bodywork as ‘excellent’, and the paintwork and upholstery as ‘good’. He is now selling the three-keeper E-Type (one US and two UK) complete with owner’s book pack, a selection of invoices and other paperwork, and a pair of keys.

The last E-Type Jaguar rolled off the production line in 1975, yet the model still excites enthusiasts of all generations, its Malcolm Sayer–penned lines considered to be among the most striking ever to adorn a motorcar. From birth it was available as a fixed head coupe or two-seat roadster. For 1966, a 2+2 version of the coupe was added to the range that was nine inches longer and featured a more vertical windscreen. The Series 3 cars were introduced in 1971, all but a handful of which were fitted with Jaguar’s new 5.3-litre V12 engine. Production continued until 1975, when the E-Type was superseded by the XJ-S; by which time some 15,000 V12s had been produced. Series 3 E-Types are readily identified by their large cross-slatted radiator grille, flared wheel arches, wide track and V12 badge on the rear.

In summary:

  • An apparently rust-free example that spent 48 years in Arizona
  • Uprated with SU carburation and a stainless steel exhaust system
  • Three owners and 83,616 miles from new
